Chapter Seven

The Cloud

There were guns blaring all morning. We haven’t had a proper bombardment on this part of the front line for a while, but it feels as though the Germans are pelting us with everything they’ve got today. General Churl is certain, and he assures us proudly, that this means the Krauts are losing their nerve. They must be using up their weapons in order to move on or move back. The general, from his comfy office at the very back of the line, is confident that this damp April day marks the end of the great world war.

All throughout April, I have been waiting for a day like this. Dreams of Von Meiser have haunted my few hours of sleep, and I see his dead, vacant stare haunting me everywhere I go on my watch. He chose to leave this life rather than see what devastation the Jerry secret weapon would cause before this month is out. There are nine days left in April, and with every sunrise, I know that that same devastation is coming closer. Churl might think I’m crazy, but Idrys still believes me. When we are alone in the tunnel, he speaks of nothing but the Poison Sky.

I have searched and searched for news of the weapon. I have tried the fiendish mind of the commandant who murdered Von Meiser and the heads of all his cronies, in their own war offices a fair distance from here. I have pushed my mind to its most extreme limits in the quest for the information I wanted, but to no avail. All I can do is wait for the Poison Sky to come and hope that my wits are about me to tackle it when it arrives.

The bombardment of guns ended as suddenly as it had begun, perhaps only an hour or so ago. I sit in our cave of hollow earth now, listening to the gentle rain fall outside as though the air was never filled with fire and explosions from the German shells. When it all goes quiet on No Man’s Land, usually we are relieved by it. On this night, though, I don’t feel like I can breathe that thankful sigh. Something tells me the bombardment isn’t over. It’s simply taking a new shape.

I have known for a while that something is coming. Tonight, I am certain it has arrived.

I closed the little leather book in my hands, setting down my pen and squeezing the pages together for one long, thoughtful moment. Idrys let loose a grunt, opening one sleepy eye to observe me from across the room. There were just the two of us in this part of the trench now, everyone else had managed to get themselves moved to other projects or had suffered a worse fate than I cared to think about in that moment. There was only Idrys and his furtive, low sigh that I could stand to focus on.

“I don’t want to know what you’re thinking, do I?” he asked me.
